Spirited Kilmarnock earn point at Aberdeen

Kilmarnock survived the closing stages with 10 men to claim their first Scottish Premiership point of the season after a spirited goalless draw with Aberdeen.

Neil McCann’s side remain without a win after their opening five league games, but this was a marked improvement on Wednesday’s defeat by St Mirren.

Aberdeen could also take some encouragement from their display after the timid performance in last weekend’s 3-0 defeat by Celtic attracted criticism, although the home supporters were far from satisfied at the final whistle.

Neither side could find a way through, but there was plenty of endeavour, with 21 shots between them, although only six were on target.

This was despite Aberdeen hitting the post through Tony Yogane, while Stephen Robinson’s side had the better of the second.

They could not find the breakthrough, however, even after Aaron Tshibola was sent off in the 83rd minute for a second yellow card.

The absence of goals was perhaps more a reflection of a lack of confidence in the final third, coupled with a shortage of quality when it mattered most.

Both managers will nevertheless be encouraged by the performances of their sides, with each securing their first clean sheet of the season.
